Geography of the path of the Gods

If we need to decide between C, E or D, do you have any recommendations as far as which route is nicer?

The easiest one is A-B, around 6km. If you are in shape enough to walk for about 3 hours it is ok. The others are more challenging, isn’t just lenght, which is roughly the same, you have to keep in mind elevation, C, D, E, (places in Praiano) are all places at about 50/80masl and A (bomerano ) is around 650masl and B (nocelle). You can easily understand that C, D, E are really steep paths. So, said that, first A-B, second C-B, third D-B. more details here

Means of transport of the path of the Gods

Best way to reach the path of the Gods from Amalfi?

Path of the Gods starting point lays just at a corner of Piazza Capasso in Bomerano, an Agerola’s hamlet. To reach it get a SITA bus from Amalfi to Agerola, you can buy the ticket in the bar just in front of the bus parking. Once inside the bus kindly ask the driver to inform you where is the bus stop for “Bomerano” or “Sentiero degli Dei”, usually he/she’ll shout these names just at the right place but they’re not obliged to so, sometime, if you don’t ask before nobody will tell you where/when to get off.

How do we get back and forth between Sorrento and the trail?

Let me see, from Sorrento you have more than a couple of choices:
1 you can catch the SITA bus to Amalfi, then another SITA bus to Bomerano (cheap, around  5.0€, but stressful);
2 you can catch the SITA bus to Amalfi, then another SEA bus to Bomerano (cheap, around  9.0€, less stressful);
3 get a private transfer from Sorrento directly to Bomerano (quite expensive, around €120);
4 get the boat from Sorrento to Amalfi (around €20) then a SITA or SEA bus (1.80€/7.00€) or private transfer (last time asked me €80 ) to Bomerano;

The best way to do the path of the gods is to start from Bomerano, so East-West. These because you have the best panorama just in front of you, and if you set in the morning you have the sun behind you. So, start in Bomerano, finishing in Positano, catch a boat there to Sorrento.

If you start directly from Sorrento SITA bus station you can get the bus, but only because you can find seats otherwise you have to stand for 90mins of narrow curves. No way even for locals. For sure you will find some difficulties in Amalfi to find a seats in the SITA bus to Bomerano.

My thought on private transfer is:  it depends on how many of you are, I mean if you are six of you, for example, you can share the price of a private transfer, it would be €20 per person from Sorrento to Bomerano (one way). Private van, AC, starts at the time you prefer… it isn’t properly a big deal but surely will be  more comfortable.

To avoid the traffic jam along the Amalfi Coast (even plus 2hrs on your scheduled timetable) there is another option: get the local train/bus or private transfer to Bomerano from Naples side. It isn’t the same panorama but you will not stuck in the traffic. Train/BUS:You have to catch the local train (circumvesuviana) to Castellammare and then and then a bus (SITA) to Bomerano. With private transfer it is around one hour, with the bus around two/two and half hours.

Is it possible to buy the SITA bus tickets the day before the hike?

Absolutely possible! tobacconists, bars and some groceries have the tickets. If you get more than 3 buses probably it is cheaper to buy the tourist ticket valid for 24 hrs.

How can I get to the start of the trail and how do I come back from the end to Napoli?

Quite tough but doable.
shortly:
-there is a SITA bus from Napoli to Bomerano @ around 08:00, double check the time and the place where to start. This solution will bring you in about 90 min directly to the start point of POG.
-do the path and get the bus from Nocelle to Chiesa Nuova / Bar Internazionale
-get the SITA bus from Positano to Sorrento (timetables here)
-get the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Napoli.

How to walk the path of the Gods

Can a 4 year old do this hike?

Path of the Gods it isn’t a smooth walk. It is exposed in some parts. It facesw south so could be terribly sunny. Are you an experienced hiker? Is your child a mischievous little rascal?
Yes, you can do it, but you must monitor what the little rascal could do 😉

Would trainers suffice for this walk or are hiking boots necessary?

While for a bet I did in bare foot hiking boots highly recommended. Trainers will suffice, sure, but, again, hiking boots highly recommended :mrgreen:

Which part of the Path og the Gods – the higher or lower – is wider generally or provides handrails?

No handrails for almost all the path. And where you’ll find… do not trust the handrails! No maintenance was done in the last 10 years. If you suffer of vertigo higher is better.

How long does the hike typically take from Praiano?

For how long it’s up to you, I’m not fit by my standards and I can do in 60/70 mins, I had a really fit (by their standads) group in June, they did in 3hrs. The hike will be around 6km.

Do you have to walk the path of the Gods with a guide or can you do it on your own ?

The path is well marked and a little bit crowded. My suggestion about doing with a guide or not are all here. By the way, probably, the best answer is: Do you really want to invest your hard-earned money and precious vacation time into hanging around a bunch of other tourists boxed into buses, without ever venturing into the unknown? It can be tough staying in a new place; sometimes, you don’t even know the right questions to ask. A professional local guide can help you, and can introduce you to things you didn’t even know you didn’t know. Going local ensures that you will have an authentic, unique experience. Why? because a local guide does the legwork, literally, for you. In one day you can have the experience that took months to acquire. Discover the hidden treasures — point of view, small churches, open gardens — that were unnoticed at a “first-glance”.
